Questlove x Dust & Grooves x Whatnot | Vinyl Auction Event

When we interviewed legendary record collector and The Roots frontman Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson in Philadelphia, PA for Dust & Grooves: Adventures In Record Collecting Volume 1 back in 2014, the world got a peek into his often talked about, but never seen record room and a look at his personal vinyl record and memorabilia collection. We’re delighted to be back with Questlove for a very special live charity auction this week for on the Whatnot live auction platform.

To celebrate National Record Store Day and raise funds for his Future of Food Entrepreneurship Program and Food Education Fund, he is auctioning off a few special records from his collection and picking someone in-stream to go record shopping with him at his favorite New York record shop A1 Records. The auction will start at $1, and can be bookmarked so you’ll be notified when it goes live.

Here are the details:

For this auction, our very own Jamison Harvey of Flea Market Funk will be hosting a live event on Friday, April 7 3:30pm ET on the WhatNot app. Questlove  will be auctioning off some of his personal records for the charity mentioned above.

Go to the Whatnot app, become a verified buyer to start placing your bids.

Then, on Friday, April 21 12:00pm ET, Dust & Grooves founder Eilon Paz will join Questlove at A-1 Records, where one lucky person from the auction will have the opportunity to have a private digging session with Questlove. Check out that live event on the whatnot app.

Vinyl Stories NYC: Meet. Swap. Listen

with

Talib Kweli and DJ Natasha Diggs

We’re really excited to partner with Sonos for this special event to celebrate Record Store Day 2018.

Hoping to trade a few records? Bring them in and join us for a happy hour record swap while listening to your favorite vinyl records in dedicated listening rooms at the Sonos store.

During the record swap I’ll be playing some of my favorite records and some of yours (yes! bring your own records, drop them in my cue bin and I’ll select songs to play on the main space.)

The record swap will be followed by an intimate conversation at 6:30pm with our very special guests: hip-hop recording artist Talib Kweli and DJ Natasha Diggs. They will share personal stories of their favorite vinyl records.

Tales From the Dust & Grooves California Tour

Tales from the Dust & Grooves California Tour!

On our book tour out West, the Dust & Grooves crew started in Los Angeles and traveled up the Golden State to San Francisco. It was a whirlwind few days with a lot of sun, car mixes, and tacos—books were sold, signed, and well-thumbed, and it was great to reconnect with our extended collecting family across the country.

Special thanks to all collectors and DJs who supported the project, contributed songs to our mixes, and played records at our parties.

A big thanks to all our fans and supporters who came out to hang with us, Sonos Studio, Upstairs at the Ace Hotel, and Terroir Wine Merchants for hosting us, and Now-Again Records, Dublab, Mixcloud, Rappcats, and Light in the Attic for spreading the word. Big ups to Dewar’s for sponsoring this string of California parties and supplying endless bottles of whiskey!

Book Launch Party – Thursday June 5, 2014 – Sonos Studio and Ace Hotel

The Los Angeles collecting scene felt like a real close-knit community. We set up at Sonos Studio on La Brea Ave, installing an exhibition of photos from the Dust & Grooves book, and the celebration kicked off with an opening book launch party. The night featured all-vinyl sets from DJs featured on Dust & Grooves: Cut Chemist (and his holy bible of soul), The Gaslamp Killer, Egon of Now Again, Joey Altruda, Sam Swig, Zach Cowie, Oliver Wang, and Dust & Grooves’ own Sheila B. Following the festivities on La Brea, there was an afterparty Upstairs at the Ace Hotel on the roof with Jeremy Sole.

Books were sold and signed, new friends and family were made, and a good time was had by all. If you weren’t able to make it to any of the events, here’s a complete photo and video recap from the tour.

Special thanks to all collectors and DJs who supported the project, contributed songs to our mixes, and played records at our parties.

Sunday, May 25, 2014 3pm – 9pm The Vinyl Library, London, UK

Is there a better way to finish our full-on book tour than chilling with some new friends in a library dedicated to vinyl??

In this daytime hangout, we invited local collectors and DJs to come and spin some records, and Eilon, who lost his record bag on the train to Paris, had the chance to DJ using records found in the library.

About the Vinyl Library:

Last year, vinyl librarians Sophie Austin and Elly Rendall started a volunteer-run lending library of records in north London, stocked entirely by donations from the public. Now… “…members get to rent out and listen to their choice of thousands of vinyl records at home. They can also have a go on the decks and listening stations and lounge about on the sofas. It’s an open community space and hosts workshops, bespoke music events, as well as an open platform for people to experiment on the decks or piano and share music stories with one another face to face. It’s a Not for Profit so any revenue past running costs goes straight back into the community outreach programmes like free mixing lessons for local young people (with a focus on encouraging more girls!).” –Le Cool You can virtually visit the Library on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
