For decades, much of Africa’s recorded music remained largely unknown outside its countries of origin. Beyond a handful of internationally recognized artists, countless musicians created groundbreaking recordings for local audiences, released through independent labels, and preserved in private collections. It was through the work of dedicated collectors, reissue labels, DJs, and music historians that these hidden treasures gradually reached listeners around the world.

The rise of hip-hop sampling culture and electronic music in the 1990s sparked a new wave of discovery, as adventurous diggers began searching through forgotten records for unique rhythms, grooves, and sounds. Among these discoveries were thousands of African LPs—records that blended traditional rhythms and instruments with the influence of James Brown, American soul, funk, and disco, creating a sound unlike anything else.

From the highlife-inspired grooves of West Africa to the deep funk of Nigeria, the soul-infused sounds of Ghana, and the rhythmic innovations found across the continent, this volume explores the artists, labels, and recordings that defined a golden era of African groove music.

The book also traces the important role played by independent labels and curators in bringing these recordings back into circulation, from early pioneers of African rare groove compilations to the dedicated reissue projects that introduced generations of listeners to the depth and diversity of African music.
