Paying homage to a culture known for its rhythms and rich brews. George Otsuka Quintet – Loving You George: Cult LP by master Japanese drummer George Otsuka and his quintet, recorded live on 19th July 1975 at the Nemu Jazz Inn and released by cutting-edge Japanese label Bellwood. “Loving You George” comprises four superb performances led by Otsuka powerful drumming and Fumio Karashima’s fender Rhodes including a wonderfully funky take on Minnie Riperton’s “Loving You”.
Black Artist Group – For Peace And Liberty, In Paris dec 1972: Recorded in Paris in Dec. 1972 when the musicians had recently arrived from St Louis. BAG only released one album during their existence, the cult classic “In Paris, Aries 1973”. This long-lost performance, recorded at Maison de l’ORTF in optimal conditions just a few months previously, was thought lost until recently unearthed from the vaults of INA (Institut National de l’Audiovisuel).
Don Cherry – Home Boy, Sister Out: Gatefold Sleeve with 2 LPs including the original 1985 LP plus an additional LP worth of bonus tracks plus new liner notes by French journalist Jacques Denis (Liberation, Superfly) in French and English.
Various – This Is Mainstream!: Wewantsounds continues its collaboration with Bob Shad’s grandchildren, Mia and Judd Apatow, to present a selection of 13 turntable-friendly Mainstream tracks recorded between 1970 and 1973 and showcasing the label’s superb blend of Funk, Soul and Jazz.
Jack Wilkins – Windows: Jack Wilkins’s highly sought-after album recorded for Bob Shad’s Mainstream Records in 1973 and featuring his cult rendition of Freddie Hubbard’s classic “Red Clay,” sampled by A Tribe Called Quest (‘Sucka N****’) and Chance The Rapper (NaNa).

Ondatropica – Ondatropica: Conceived by Colombian musician Mario Galeano, the force behind the band Frente Cumbiero, and English producer Will ‘Quantic’ Holland, Ondatrópica represents both the classic and modern styles of la musica Colombiana.
The Mauskovic Dance Band – The Mauskovic Dance Band: The eponymous debut LP from in-demand Amsterdam five-piece The Mauskovic Dance Band – fusing no-wave dance punk, Afro-Caribbean rhythms and space disco in a “controlled explosion.” Entirely self-produced, the band has reiterated their favorite elements of the 70s and 80s legacy of the Afro-Latin psychedelic music of Colombia and Peru, interpreting it through the context of modern-day Amsterdam.
Lord Echo – Melodies: Double vinyl re-issue of the classic Lord Echo debut. Features the huge single “Thinking Of You.” Available for the first time on general release outside Japan.
Rex Omar – Rex Omar: A definitive piece of Omar’s repertoire comes via his Dangerous album – critically acclaimed in Ghana, it’s a self-produced gem recorded in London circa 1997. Released on CD only and distributed exclusively in West Africa, the album gained immense popularity in Omar’s homeland reaching platinum status. Soundway presents the four premier cuts for a new self-titled EP, along with Kele Ngele taken from his 2004 album Ajala.
Yoruba Singers – Ojinga’s Own: The 1974 debut album Ojinga’s Own and single Basa Bongo/Black Pepper by Guyanese Afro-Folk band The Yoruba Singers has been remastered for vinyl and digital. Integral to the Yoruba Singers’ sound are echoes of Obeah traditions which are very closely related to the Santería religion of Cuba and the Orisha and Shango traditions of Trinidad and Tobago.
Free Youth – “We Can Move”: Free Youth comprised three main members: brothers Terry “Sir Robot” Bright and Abednego “King Abed” Ayim Bright, and their friend Lenny “Nii Addy” Dimple. “We Can Move” was the trio’s only release and originally pressed on 7-inch vinyl, but now comes fully restored, remastered, and available for the first time on 12-inch vinyl along with the original cover art.

This is in part due to an incredibly busy couple of weeks touring with book release events across the US and Europe, but these two labels are incredible, and have each put together an amazing bundle of records that have a combined total of $325.
Everybody and their mother is going to want in on this week’s fantastic addition to The Vinyl Motherlode, this time from UK label Strut Records! Founded in 1999, they’ve given the world 25 years of fantastic dance, jazz, and afrobeat, and press the music of legends, among them Sun Ra and Patrice Rushen. They also serve as the reissue label for !K7, another important label that we admire. They have generously chosen a bundle of 5 great records to give to our one lucky winner:
Various Artists – Nigeria 70: The Definitive Story of 1970s Funky Lagos – The first compilation of funk from Lagos, released in 2001, this record is responsible for a wave of new releases in afro-funk and afro-jazz throughout the 2000s and 2010s. All music is calling it, “an essential addition to any collection of continental African music in general and Nigerian music in particular.”
Patrice Rushen – Remind Me (The Classic Elektra Recordings 1978-1984) – From visionary Patrice Rushen, this is a 3LP compilation of classics, 12-inch versions and original samples from her work with Elektra/Asylum, remastered from the original tapes by The Carvery. Contains an exclusive new interview with Rushen as well as rare photos.
Mulatu Astatke – Mulatu of Ethiopia – A gorgeous record combining American soul and jazz with the Ethiopian pentatonic scale, now pressed on white vinyl featuring both the stereo mix and the mono mix (which has been remastered from the original tapes!)
Sun Ra – Lanquidity – This limited edition of the seminal album reflects the album’s original packaging with a tip on sleeve and OBI strip, and features both liner notes and a limited poster from Strut Records.
Various Artists – Black Fire, Soul Love Now: the Black Fire Records Story 1975-1993 – A Strut Records and Black Fire collaboration. The record brings together some of the many highlights from this period in the label’s rich history of pressing spiritual jazz and conscious soul music. Contains a 12-inch booklet with rare photos and extensive interview with Oneness of Juju bandleader Plunky Branch.
Matsuli Music is a South African label that gives reissues and amazing South African tunes the respect they deserve, and is “one of the labels deserving a big shout out”, according to Gilles Peterson. Batumi – Self-titled: this 1974 reissue has been repressed at Pallas in Germany on 180g black vinyl. Cover printed on reverse board and includes printed inner sleeve with liner notes from Francis Gooding.
Ndikho Xaba – Ndikho Xaba and the Natives: 2022 repress of the 1971 holy grail from South African revolutionary spiritual jazz legend Ndikho Xaba, presented in a single sleeve with a four-page insert containing notes from Francis Gooding, recollections from Plunky Branch and unseen archival photographs and concert bills.
Hugh Masekela and Company – Live in Lesotho: Hugh Masekela and Company with their Live in Lesotho recording from 1980. Extended and remastered audio, new liner notes, and unseen photography.
Harari – Rufaro: Long out-of-print album marking the watershed of Harari’s evolution from Soweto soul (as The Beaters) to the afro-centric rock and funk that brought them fame and changed South Africa’s musical landscape forever.
The Brother Moves On – Tolika Mtoliki: Heavyweight vinyl edition, with sleevenotes by Francis Gooding. “Tolika Mtoliki was recorded over two periods of time at Dyertribe Studios which is the home of South African jazz legend Steve Dyer,” the band told It’s Psychedelic Baby magazine.
Various Artists – One Night in Pelican: Standard edition gatefold version without silk-screen poster. Over ten years in the making, this is the first compilation from Matsuli Music.

Our next addition is from our great friends over at Luaka Bop, founded by David Byrne in 1989, and now has Yale Evelev as their president.
Their vinyl package comes wrapped in a tape that implies fragility, but just reinforces the strength of Luaka Bop! If you manage to get your hands on these, you’ll be bopping around your living room for hours.

Staple Jr. Singers – Searching. The family is back with their sophomore album, after their first release in 1975 (2022, Luaka Bop). Searching was recorded in 2023 in West Point, Mississippi, and Nashville, Tennessee, and produced by Ahmed Gallab
Floating Points – Reflections – Mojave Dessert. It is the first in a planned series of environmental recordings by Floating Points to be filmed and recorded at different locations around the world, resulting in a short film and soundtrack.
Pharoah Sanders – Pharoah (Box Set). With Pharoah Sanders’ blessing, Luaka Bop present the definitive, remastered version of PHAROAH, his seminal record from 1977, in an embossed 2 LP box set. Alongside the original record, Luaka Bop are including two previously unreleased live performances of his masterpiece, “Harvest Time,” and a 24-page booklet with rarely seen photographs and ephemera.
Preacherman – Universal Philosophy: Preacherman Plays T.J. Hustlers Greatest Hits. Universal Philosophy grants listeners access, virtually for the very first time, to Tim’s outlook, his purpose, and the way he lives and experiences life on this planet. The music presented here is otherworldly, homespun, folk art funk–concise and stream-of-consciousness simultaneously.
Alhaji Waziri Oshomah – Vol. 1-5 1978-1984 (Waziri Box Set) This 5 LP set, Vol. 1-5 (1978-1984), focuses on Waziri’s illustrious mid-career output—the music he created during the years leading up to and after he performed his first hajj—and includes a copy of The Journey So Far, a limited-edition book written and designed by his children, to celebrate Waziri’s remarkable life and career.

This compilation of Ukrainian tunes from the later end of the 20th century are varied, and all equally as fantastic. Carefully curated by David Mas “DBGO,” Mark “Frosty” McNeill, and Matt Sullivan, this edition of comps is definitely worth having, as the audio remastering has been done by GRAMMY-nominated John Baldwin.
Also remastered by John Baldwin, Why Don’t You Smile Now: Lou Reed at Pickwick Records 1964-65 from various artists is also a super-cool anthology of cult classics and previously unreleased material. It has been produced in partnership with Laurie Anderson and the Lou Reed Archive.
Next up, we have Johnnie Frierson’s Have You Been Good To Yourself. This has never been released as an LP before, so to be able to finally get this on the decks will be an unmatched feeling. The meditative tracks take you through elements of gospel, spoken word, and blues.
They Say I’m Different by Betty Davis is also up for grabs. That voice. Her sophomore release from 1977 is often considered a funk / soul-rock essential to any collection.
Lastly, Serge Gainsbourgh’s Histoire de Melody Nelson, “one of the greatest marriages of rock band and orchestra.” according to Beck. And he’s not wrong. This is a classic for any music-lover, and so LITA initially reissued it to make it domestically available in the US.
